Abstract

The biomass energy potential in Sri Lanka has been assessed. In 1993, biomass consumption for energy was about 11.37 billion kg, which is equivalent to about 3.6 million tons of oil equivalent (MTOE) and accounted for 66% of the total primary energy consumption of the country. The share of fuel wood in the traditional energy supplies is about 88%. The household sector is the major end user and consumes 88.4% of the total biomass energy.
